Tijuana’s International Airport has claimed its position as the second busiest airport in Mexico, surpassed only by Mexico City, according to the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC). This achievement highlights the influence of Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda’s administration, which has heavily promoted tourism and economic initiatives across Baja California.
Governor Marina del Pilar credited Baja California’s Tourism Department for playing a pivotal role in this success. Between January and June of 2024, Tijuana attracted a significant 7.17 million domestic passengers, representing 10 percent of the national total and solidifying its standing as a primary travel hub in Mexico. These results, released by AFAC, showcase a remarkable increase in Tijuana’s airport activity and underscore the growing appeal of Baja California as a tourism and business destination.
Efforts to boost connectivity have been central to this success. The governor emphasized that intensive promotional campaigns portrayed Baja California as an ideal spot for both leisure and business travel. Additionally, a newly established Air Routes Committee has worked to expand the airport’s connections, collaborating with the Pacific Airport Group (GAP) to conduct key airline inspections with partners from South Korea, Japan, and China. This international outreach supports the administration’s focus on positioning Baja California as a global access point to Mexico.
Baja California’s Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Aguíñiga Rodríguez, shared data showing that the Tijuana-Mexico City and Tijuana-Guadalajara routes ranked among the nation’s busiest routes, with 1.21 million and 1.07 million passengers, respectively. This level of domestic traffic speaks to Tijuana’s role as a core transportation hub and aligns with state goals to improve connectivity between major Mexican cities.
In 2024, the Tijuana airport also resumed international routes, including flights to Phoenix, Beijing, and Las Vegas. These routes are part of the state’s strategy to welcome international travelers and stimulate economic growth. This vision, coupled with new routes, expands Tijuana’s global reach and bolsters the local economy by attracting both tourism and business travel.
Under Governor Marina del Pilar’s leadership, the airport’s expansion efforts have strengthened Tijuana’s place on the map as an essential gateway for both Mexican and international visitors. This forward momentum marks a new chapter for Baja California, as it continues to grow as a top destination in North America.
