Despite having been postponed for a week due to short notice related to the proximity of Hurricane Hilary, Provino Baja California once again achieved a successful paella contest in its 2023 edition, held on Sunday, August 27th at Viña Liceaga, Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California.
The event began at 12:00 p.m. and concluded at 7:00 p.m., with the participation of 90 paella teams. These teams started their preparations at 8 a.m. to welcome the attending public and compete. A group of 40 judges was responsible for evaluating the presented paellas. On this occasion, the event had a successful attendance with over 1000 people.
Mauricio Cantú, President of Provino Baja California, mentioned that organizing this event takes six months of effort to ensure outstanding results. Manuals of procedures have been established, with the support of sponsors, service providers, and collaboration from the regional press. “It’s a collective effort of the community to ensure the event’s success,” he said.
The main objective of the Paella Contest is to promote regional wine and encourage healthy interaction among families, friends, and attendees from the entire binational region. This event serves as an excellent opportunity to showcase the Baja Californian Wine Route and capture the essence of Valle de Guadalupe.
In this edition, 85 wineries participated and two stages with different genres of music were set up. Sufficient tables and chairs were provided for the attendees.
The winners of this year in the two categories, starting with the Quality category, were as follows: in the first place, the “Ponchos” team; in second place, “To Go”; and in third place, “San Sebastián”. In the Presentation category, the winners were: in first place, “Arigato”; in second place, “Pacífica at Ensenada Bay”; and in third place, once again, “To Go”.
