The Imperial Valley College Military and Veteran Success Center Was Recently Inaugurated

PRESS RELEASE: The first ribbon was cut for the Imperial Valley College Military and Veteran Success Center in a brief ceremony Feb. 24, 2016, at the recently opened center.

After an introduction by Sergio Lopez, the college’s interim dean of student affairs, IVC Board of Trustees President Jerry Hart did the honors, slicing the ceremonial red ribbon in two outside the center. Joining him were fellow trustees Juanita Salas, Karla Sigmond and Stephen Taylor, as well as Dr. Victor Jaime, the college president and superintendent, and Dr. Nicholas Akinkuoye, the college’s vice president of academic services. Akinkuoye is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

The center has been open and staffed since the fall, serving the college’s veterans and active military personnel.

A formal grand opening, to which the public is invited, is scheduled for April 20 in front of the college bookstore. That ceremony will feature dignitaries representing that California State Assembly and those from the various branches of U.S. military. A Navy band has agreed to perform and there will be a presentation of colors by the Naval Air Facility El Centro Color Guard.

The April 20 ceremony will take part during Campus Hour, 12:50 p.m. to 1:50 p.m.
