The Calexico Chamber of Commerce held its annual Lava Lamp Awards honoring members of the community that have supported Calexico through their community work.
The Lava Lamp recognition is given to members who do a lot for the community. The Lava Lamp Awards started in 1995 when Chamber Executive Director Hildy Carrillo worked as the publisher of the Calexico Chronicle. The first recipient was former Chamber Director and community volunteer, Linda Garwood.
Hildy Carillo, Director of the Calexico Chamber of Commerce, said that these Lava Lamps Awards cannot be lobbied or asked for. She said that the Lava Lamps are given to those that do a lot for the community and do not seek recognition or fame by doing their work.
The winner of the Lava Lamp Awards does not know if he or she will be the award until it’s announced. Since 1995, there have been over 60 recipients of this award.
The Lava Lamp Awards this year was given to Attorney Eduardo Rivera, Esther Gomez, Bertha Fletes, and Felix and Soledad Meza.
