The 82nd Golden Globe Awards: A Night of Historic Wins and Firsts

-Editorial

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards, held on January 5, 2025, marked a memorable night for the entertainment industry, as excellence in film and television was recognized with a series of exciting and historic moments. Hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, this year’s ceremony was the first time in Golden Globe history that a woman hosted the event solo. Her sharp humor and engaging presence helped elevate the evening’s atmosphere, making it a night to remember for both nominees and viewers alike. The ceremony was broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ to a global audience.

The nominations, announced in a press conference on December 9, 2024, brought attention to a highly competitive field. The film Emilia Pérez made history by earning a record-breaking ten nominations, the most for any comedy or musical in Golden Globe history. The film came close to breaking the all-time record of eleven nominations, set by Nashville in 1975. Other notable films included The Brutalist, which garnered seven nominations, and Conclave, which secured six. The Bear dominated the television nominations, leading the pack with five, while Shōgun and Only Murders in the Building followed with four each.

In a year that embraced diversity, Emilia Pérez also marked a groundbreaking achievement with Karla Sofía Gascón, who made history as the first transgender actress to be nominated for a Golden Globe in a leading film role. Gascón was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, setting a significant precedent for future nominations in the industry. Alongside Gascón, Emilia Pérez‘s director, Jacques Audiard, earned three nominations: Best Director, Best Screenplay, and co-lyricist of the Best Original Song nominee “El Mal.” Camille and Clément Ducol, the song’s composers, shared Audiard’s distinction, highlighting the film’s significant presence during the evening’s awards.

The Golden Globes also brought back its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards after a hiatus. The Cecil B. DeMille Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment, was presented to actress Viola Davis, while the Carol Burnett Award, celebrating a lifetime of achievement in television, was awarded to actor Ted Danson. These awards were presented during a glamorous, untelevised gala dinner on January 3, 2025, prior to the main event, offering an exclusive moment to honor these legends in their respective fields.

The Brutalist triumphed in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category, defeating strong competition from films such as A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Nickel Boys, and September 5. In the Musical or Comedy category, Emilia Pérez emerged victorious, outshining other contenders like Anora, Challengers, A Real Pain, The Substance, and Wicked. The Animated category was claimed by Flow, which defeated notable nominees including Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, Moana 2, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, and The Wild Robot.

In the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture category, Emilia Pérez took home the award as the best film from outside the United States, cementing its success with dual-category wins. Other nominees in this category included All We Imagine as Light (India), The Girl with the Needle (Denmark), I’m Still Here (Brazil), The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Germany), and Vermiglio (Italy), showcasing the global range of talent in contemporary cinema.

The acting categories featured some of the most celebrated performances of the year. Adrien Brody earned the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama for his remarkable role in The Brutalist. In a highly competitive category, Fernanda Torres won Best Actress for her powerful performance in I’m Still Here. Meanwhile, the Musical or Comedy categories saw Sebastian Stan take home the Best Actor award for his role in A Different Man, and Demi Moore was named Best Actress for her critically acclaimed role in The Substance.

In the Supporting categories, Kieran Culkin was recognized as Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain, and Zoe Saldaña was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Emilia Pérez, further solidifying the film’s dominance during the evening’s proceedings.
