As temperatures begin to drop, Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) has announced a series of energy-saving tips to help customers manage their natural gas use during the winter months. With advice on efficiency improvements and rebate programs, SoCalGas aims to reduce energy costs and promote sustainability.
“As we transition into the cooler months, SoCalGas is here to support our customers in managing their energy use through energy efficiency programs, while ensuring comfort throughout the season,” said Don Widjaja, vice president of customer services field and solutions at SoCalGas. “Together, we can take simple yet effective steps to lower energy consumption, save on bills, and contribute to a more sustainable future.”
To help manage energy expenses this winter, SoCalGas suggests several easy ways to reduce consumption. Start by lowering your thermostat by five to eight degrees when you’re away, as heating typically accounts for the largest portion of energy costs. Optimize appliance use by cleaning your dryer’s lint filter regularly and running full loads; upgrading to an energy-efficient dryer model can save up to 20% in energy costs. Installing low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators also cuts down on both water and energy usage. Additionally, check and seal any leaks around ducts, windows, and doors to prevent heat loss—leaky ducts can increase heating costs by 10%-30%. Lastly, replace furnace filters monthly during the heating season to maintain optimal performance. For those considering new appliances, SoCalGas’ Marketplace offers access to energy-efficient models, with an extra 50% rebate on select items available through November 30, 2024.
SoCalGas offers several programs and tools to help customers manage energy costs effectively. The Ways to Save Tool provides a personalized household energy survey with tips and information on appliance rebates. For those interested in tracking cost changes, customers can sign up for text notifications to receive alerts if there’s a 20% increase in the natural gas commodity cost, with notifications available from December 2024 through March 2025.
The Energy Savings Assistance Program offers free energy-saving home improvements, such as water heater blankets and attic insulation, for qualified low-income households. Additionally, the CARE Program provides a 20% discount on natural gas bills for eligible households statewide. Recently, SoCalGas redesigned its website to enhance user experience, improve navigation, and offer easier access to account management, payment options, and energy-saving resources.
