In her morning press conference on Monday, President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered a firm message concerning recent developments affecting the Mexican community in the United States, particularly in Los Angeles.
President Sheinbaum highlighted the contributions of Mexican nationals living in the U.S., describing them as “hardworking and honest.” She noted that most have legal status—either as workers or U.S. citizens—and that those without documents have typically lived in the country for many years. “They contribute to both the U.S. and Mexican economies,” she said, adding that their labor is essential to the U.S. economy.
She expressed gratitude to the City of Los Angeles for its historical openness, stating, “Los Angeles has generously welcomed hundreds of thousands of Mexicans over the years, and Mexicans have also shown generosity toward the city in return.”
The president reiterated Mexico’s unwavering commitment to protecting the human rights of its citizens abroad, regardless of their immigration status. She called on U.S. authorities to ensure that all immigration procedures follow due process and are carried out with respect for human dignity and the rule of law.
Addressing recent unrest, Sheinbaum condemned the use of violence during protests, saying, “The burning of patrol cars seems more like provocation than resistance. We condemn violence from any side.” She urged the Mexican community to remain peaceful and avoid falling into provocations.
Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico is using all diplomatic and legal avenues to protest practices that criminalize migration and endanger Mexican communities in the U.S. She said consulates have activated protection protocols and are providing legal guidance to detained nationals, while also informing communities of their rights.
She concluded by stating that migration must be addressed through a comprehensive, humane, and regionally shared responsibility. Mexico, she said, remains committed to working with the U.S. to seek solutions that uphold human rights, legality, and mutual development.
