BRAWLEY, CA.- With this year’s Binational Health Week, Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District along with its Ventanilla de Salud program hosted a planning meeting with health partners from around the Imperial and Mexicali Valley before its celebration.
The Binational Health Week activities aim to improve the health and well-being of the Latino community living in the U.S. and Canada through education and awareness.
Additionally, the initiative fosters community solidarity by bringing together existing resources and efforts by offering health screenings and other services like glucose, cholesterol, BMI and blood pressure checks at the various events hosted throughout the community.
Close to one dozen health agencies gather together every year at the Pioneers Memorial Hospital for the meeting to brainstorm on ways to reach out the community.
The festivities officially initiated on September 28 with an Opening Ceremony at San Juan Diego Parish Hall in Calexico.
During this time, a resource fair was available to community members followed by nearly a month’s-worth of health events that will benefit both children and adults throughout Imperial County.
On this year’s agenda for PMHD and Ventanilla de Salud was the September 28 resource fair, the Student Health and Wellness Fair on October 9 at Imperial Valley College and the Farm Workers Health Fair at the Mexican Consulate in Calexico on Oct. 25.
Additional events will include Walk to School Day and the Annual March Against Domestic Violence with supporting agencies including IV Child Asthma Program, Woman Haven and Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center to name a few.
