PIONEERS MEMORIAL FIRST TO OFFER 3D MAMMOGRAMS

BRAWLEY, CA — Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District, an Affiliate of Scripps Health continues to be the leading source in women’s health in Imperial County as it continues to expand its list of tech-leading services.

PMHD recently became the first and now only provider in the border region to offer 3D mammography exams, which are clinically proven to increase the detention of breast cancers.

The Genius 3D exam, utilizes advanced technology that offers a better view of the breast and can even provide improved imaging on thicker tissues.

“Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District is committed to the fight against breast cancer,” said Interventional Radiologist Dr. Sharouz Tahvilian. “In offering the Genius exam, we are able to provide a more accurate tool for breast cancer screening.”

Researchers have found that the 3D exam finds 20 to 65 percent more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D alone for an average increase of 41.3 percent.

Additionally, the exam is FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone.

“It’s Pioneers’ commitment to the increasing demand for early detection in breast cancer in the Imperial Valley—and we take great pride in being the only one in the region to offer these in-depth exams, said Interventional Radiologist Dr. George Rapp.

The 3D mammogram exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam.

In the 3D test, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time.

The exam is more in line with the makeup of the breast as it is a three-dimensional object composed of different structures located at different heights within the breast.

These structures can overlap and cause confusion when viewed as a flat two-dimensional image. This confusion of overlapping of tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to callbacks.

In acquiring the Genius 3D machine PIONEERS is revolutionizing how breast cancer is detected by providing a better option for women of all breast densities.
