-Editorial

While the stock markets in Latin America continue to drop this week, amid the uncertainty generated in the world economy by the new Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), there is also uncertainty in the Mexico-United States border region about a possible US Port of Entry closure due to the pandemic.

The Secretary of Foreign Relations in Mexico sent a statement today regarding the contact that Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and Michael Pompeo have established in recent days and report that the Government of Mexico has proposed to undertake a joint bilateral effort designed to confront coordinated and effectively the spread of COVID-19 in both countries.

Likewise, Foreign Minister Ebrard reiterated the importance of moving forward with the implementation of T-MEC in order to have new tools to provide certainty to the markets and to face the economic effects of the pandemic. The bilateral initiative would seek to maintain trade flows and economic activity between the two countries while including measures to deal with the spread of COVID-19.

Secretary, Marcelo Ebrad communicated today in a tweet that he proposed Secretary Mike Pompeo measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, without having to paralyze the economic activity and suggesting that the border remains open to trade and work, for which, tomorrow, March 20, he will be able to have more details of the progress they reached.

For its part, the regional CBP office reported that so far the rumors of the closure of US Ports of Entry are false, so the public is encouraged to always rely on official and truthful sources of information to avoid any misunderstandings.
