Mexico Launches Holiday Support Program for Returning Citizens

-Editorial

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has unveiled the “Welcome, Heroic Fellow Countrymen and Women” Winter 2024 program, a comprehensive initiative designed to provide a safe and efficient travel experience for Mexicans returning from abroad during the holiday season. The program, which runs from November 28, 2024, to January 12, 2025, offers an array of resources and support to facilitate a smooth journey home.

Travelers can access assistance, file complaints, or seek information through several channels, including the 911 emergency line and dedicated hotlines in Mexico (800 2018 542 and 800 004 6264) and the United States (1877 210 9469 or (011 52) 800 044 6264). Additionally, support is available on social media platforms (@heroespaisanos) and via email at heroespaisanos@inami.gob.mx.

The initiative is coordinated by the National Institute of Migration (INM) in partnership with 40 government agencies. It features 253 service modules and 522 observers stationed across Mexico’s 31 states and Mexico City, ensuring comprehensive coverage. The program aims to uphold human rights, enhance safety, and streamline the transit and stay of Mexican nationals.

During her daily press briefing, President Sheinbaum highlighted the program’s resources, stating, “These are the phone numbers and social media channels where you can report issues or request assistance.” Secretary of Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez reiterated the initiative’s focus on protecting travelers’ rights, safeguarding their belongings, and ensuring a seamless travel experience.

Since its launch, the program has facilitated 670,373 services, including 669,409 in-person consultations, 910 telephone inquiries, 27 email responses, and 27 social media interactions. It has also assisted with four major vehicular caravans, comprising 5,050 vehicles, at key northern border entry points such as Matamoros, Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo (Tamaulipas), and Piedras Negras (Coahuila).

A cornerstone of the program is the distribution of 800,000 bilingual Guías Paisano (Paisano Guides), which provide essential information on consular procedures, vehicle permits, customs declarations, and tax exemptions. The guides also cover topics such as pet import requirements, tourist passes for Mexico City, and remittance services, ensuring travelers are well-informed.

While the program has been largely successful, it has also faced challenges. To date, 41 complaints have been registered, primarily involving theft and abuse of authority. President Sheinbaum has vowed strict oversight to address these issues, particularly when government officials are implicated, emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency.

Sheinbaum concluded by acknowledging the invaluable contributions of Mexicans living abroad. She recognized their sacrifices and their critical role in supporting both their home country and adopted communities. “We honor their commitment and are dedicated to ensuring their journey home is as seamless and joyous as possible during this festive season,” she stated.

With its wide-reaching support system and commitment to safeguarding the rights of returning Mexicans, the “Welcome, Heroic Fellow Countrymen and Women” program underscores Mexico’s dedication to its citizens and the strengthening of ties between the nation and its diaspora.
