Governor Katie Hobbs has appointed Mayor Douglas Nicholls to the Arizona Space Commission, recognizing his significant contributions to regional economic development and his background in civil engineering. As one of only seven leaders statewide selected for this prestigious role, Mayor Nicholls is set to bring his expertise to the Commission’s efforts in advancing Arizona’s space industry.

The Arizona Space Commission, which had been inactive for the past decade, was revived through the passage of HB2254. The Commission aims to position Arizona as a national leader in the growing space economy. Its initiatives will focus on identifying strategic aerospace projects, expanding industry partnerships, and creating educational opportunities related to aerospace throughout the state.

“I’m honored to have been selected by Governor Hobbs to serve on this Commission, and I will work diligently to explore how we can bring new opportunities to our great state and the city of Yuma,” said Mayor Nicholls. “I see tremendous potential for increased opportunities, enhanced quality of life, and growth in higher education. We need to be forward-thinking and involved in the industries of the future.”

A staunch advocate for regional economic growth, Mayor Nicholls has long championed public-private partnerships to drive innovation and job creation. He founded 4FrontED, a binational initiative aimed at promoting cross-border collaboration, and has lent his expertise to various state committees and boards. Additionally, he has been a strong supporter of Yuma’s efforts to establish a spaceport, recognizing the potential for the region to attract aerospace and technology industries, generate high-quality jobs, and establish itself as a hub for advanced innovation.

With his appointment to the Arizona Space Commission, Mayor Nicholls strengthens Yuma’s role in Arizona’s statewide aerospace initiatives, bringing investment and fostering job growth within the space sector.
