The Calexico City Council appointed Councilwoman Maritza Hurtado to be the new Mayor for the 2017-18 fiscal year. The council met in regular session on Tuesday, July 5th, to select a new Mayor. In a very short meeting that only lasted twenty-five minutes, the council elected a new Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem.

As per municipal code, the City Council re-organizes each July at the beginning of the fiscal year.

The Council voted 4-0 to name Hurtado as the new Mayor. She was elected in 2010 along with Councilman Bill Hodge and re-elected in 2014.

The council voted to appoint Lewis Pacheco as the Mayor Pro Tem. Pacheco was first elected in 2004 but lost his re-election. Eight years later he was elected again to city council last year.
