Justice for All: Imperial County Courthouse Welcomes Public for Law Day Celebration

-Editorial

The Imperial County Courthouse came alive with energy and community spirit on May 1, as families, students, and legal professionals gathered for the annual Law Day celebration. This event blended civic education with family-friendly festivities.

This year’s Law Day carried the national theme Out of Many, One,” a reminder of unity under the law and the important role of democracy in diverse communities. The event offered a unique opportunity for residents to explore the workings of the justice system in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Beyond Borders Gazette had a booth at the event.

Hosted at the historic courthouse on West Main Street, Law Day featured extended court hours, allowing community members to access services such as free legal advice, jury information, and clerk assistance. Inside the courthouse, judges and staff guided tours through courtrooms and offices, providing insight into the judicial process and encouraging civic engagement.

“Law Day is really important for the community of the Imperial Valley,” Judge Quan said. “A lot of people have misconceptions or maybe a fear of what goes on inside our courthouses. When we do Law Day, it allows them to come in, get a good feeling about the services offered, and understand what can be done for them.” Judge Quan noted that the event helps break down barriers between the court and the public. “It allows them to get familiar with the system itself, and that goes a long way in making sure the community feels comfortable and sees us as approachable.”

Presiding Judge Marco Núñez expressed his enthusiasm as the courthouse welcomed residents for Law Day 2025.

“I feel great. We’re just doing what we’ve always been doing, and we’re going strong. This is a great turnout today. It puts a big smile on my face to see so many people here for Law Day,” Núñez said.

Judge Monica Lepe-Negrete highlighted the high level of community engagement: “I’m looking around—it’s incredible participation by the community.“

Judge Eran Bermudez echoed the sentiment, adding, “I’m very grateful. I know the Court Executive Officer and staff worked hard to put this event on, and it’s great to see the community out here. It’s also great for them to see all the resources available to them. It’s just—it’s very rewarding.”

This is also an opportunity for the District Attorney’s Office to promote its services.

“Since becoming District Attorney, my focus has been making our office more accessible and less intimidating,” said Imperial County District Attorney George Marquez. “We meet people where they are—giving tailored presentations to local groups, like the Imperial Valley Association of Realtors, to explain how our office works. Law Day is a great chance for the community, especially youth, to connect with the legal system and learn about the many services available.”

Guillermo Fernandez, Administrative Services Manager for the Imperial County Department of Child Support Services, emphasized the importance of public outreach during Law Day. “We’re here to provide legal information about the child support program and inform parents about the options they have in navigating the judicial system,” Fernandez said. He encouraged families to visit the event, noting the mix of activities and resources available: “There’s a lot of games and information for parents and children, so stop by and enjoy.” Reflecting on the broader significance of Law Day, Fernandez added, “It’s a great opportunity to give back to the community—not just as a public officer, but also as a legal professional who wants to help people here in Imperial County.”

Local food and craft vendors lined the walkway, while a safety vehicle showcase—featuring police cruisers, fire engines, and other emergency vehicles—attracted curious onlookers of all ages. Raffle prizes, free giveaways, and recruitment booths from law enforcement and public service agencies added to the interactive experience.

Volunteers and court staff were on hand throughout the evening to answer questions and connect attendees with legal resources.
