Johnson and Johnson Vaccine Will Help Border Communities Reopen the Border

Tijuana, Mexicali, and Tecate are the border cities of Baja California that will be benefited from the vaccines that the United States offered to Mexico for its application to people between 18 and 39 years old.

This was confirmed by the Secretary of State Health, Alonso Pérez Rico, who announced that Johnson & Johnson will be dispersed in about 40 municipalities that border the northern border of the country.

According to the projection, 700 thousand 913 doses are contemplated for Tijuana, Mexicali 350 thousand 269, and Tecate approximately 40 thousand.

“This vaccine that the United States is going to donate to Mexico and that Mexico will send us for the population between 18 and 39 years old, will cover the group that we need because we are already vaccinating 40 and older,” he said.

In the same sense, he said: “If we finish the range of 40 and they send us this vaccine (for 18 to 39 years), we will quickly reach herd immunity, above 80% of the vaccinated population, which is needed for the opening of the border,” he stressed.

Even with binational vaccination initiatives, the Secretary of Health emphasized that it is extremely important that the population continue to take care of itself, to soon enter the “new normal.”

In the case of the city of Mexicali, which has been the municipality of the State with an increase in infections, he warned that they are evaluating the scenario and that if necessary there will no longer be a reduction in capacity, but restrictions on activities.

On the other hand, he reported that Baja California exceeded one million people vaccinated against Covid, of which 377,875 have the complete scheme.

Vaccination in the 40 to 49-year-old population is only maintained in the municipalities of Mexicali, Ensenada, and Tijuana, with high-efficiency modules, enabled.

In the case of Tijuana, there are as points the new Government Center, UABC Campus Otay, Lazaro Cárdenas Federal High School, and the Chevron Stadium;  additionally, they are applying second doses of Pfizer and Sinovac, pending in population.

The state official reported that 92,430 doses of the Pfizer brand and 2,400 of Sinovac arrived in Baja California. Tomorrow, Saturday, the vaccination plan will follow from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, not so on Sunday, as they suspend the strategy due to the development of the electoral day.

In Mexicali, the vaccination sites-enabled this Friday are the Military Camp 23 Motorized Cavalry Regiment, Plaza Cachanilla, and Plaza Sendero.

In the port of Ensenada there is the High-Performance Center, the Technological Institute, the Matías Gómez Elementary School, the Petronila Sandez Teacher School, and the Cecyte Plantel Ensenada; in Playas de Rosarito, the Rosarito Health Center.

Currently, the Covid hospital occupancy in Baja California is 24.69%, with 429 available beds, 224 available ventilators, 100 hospitalized patients (confirmed by the laboratory), and an effective reproduction rate of 0.88.

Regarding the figures of people infected by COVID-19 in our entity, the SISVER (national) platform reports at the cutoff of midnight on June 3, that 115 thousand 243 cases have been studied, of which 49 thousand 018 were positive.

In Tijuana there are 17,673 patients; 19,042 in the city of Mexicali; Ensenada 6,923; Rosarito 1,082; Tecate with 1,580;  in San Quintín / Vicente Guerrero 2,008 and San Felipe 710; there are 46,104 recovered COVID-19 patients.

Regarding deaths from coronavirus, they report accumulated 8 thousand 168. Tijuana with 3,658, Mexicali 3,029;  Ensenada 1,122;  Tecate 193;  Rosarito 31;  San Quintín/Vicente Guerrero with 125 and San Felipe 10 deaths.

Baja California increased its active cases compared to the previous day, 393 in total, divided as follows: Mexicali: 259, Tijuana: 100, Ensenada: 16, San Quintín: 3, Playas de Rosarito: 4, Tecate: 6 and  Saint Philip: 5.
