-Editorial

With his family standing proudly by his side, Jeff Gonzalez was sworn in as the Assemblyman for California’s District 36, representing Riverside, San Bernardino, and Imperial Counties. Gonzalez, a combat veteran and United States Marine took the oath of office with a deep sense of duty and gratitude.

“As a United States Marine, I swore an oath to support and defend our nation and the United States Constitution,” Gonzalez said in his remarks. “Today, with my family by my side, I swore an oath to serve yet again.”

Jeff Gonzalez’s swearing-in marks a historic moment for the Imperial Valley, as he becomes the first Republican to represent the region in the State Assembly since 2008.

“As I was sworn into office, I had each constituent of Riverside, San Bernardino, and Imperial Counties at the top of mind,” Gonzalez stated. “As your Assemblyman, I can promise you this—I will always put our community first.”

District 36 voters have entrusted Gonzalez to represent their voices in Sacramento, a responsibility he does not take lightly. “Thank you, District 36, for allowing me to serve you!” Gonzalez added. “Let’s get to work.”

Gonzalez’s story resonates with constituents from all walks of life. His military service in the United States Marine Corps shaped his ability to lead under pressure and appreciate the sacrifices tied to freedom. As a small business owner, he has navigated California’s challenging economic climate, giving him firsthand insight into the struggles of entrepreneurs.

As a father to a son with cerebral palsy, he has experienced the complexities of the healthcare system and understands the importance of ensuring access to quality care for all families. These lived experiences, coupled with his enduring role as a pastor offering solace and support to those in need, define Gonzalez’s vision for leadership: one rooted in service, understanding, and a determination to tackle California’s toughest challenges head-on.

The 2024 election marked a groundbreaking moment for the Imperial Valley, signaling a significant political realignment. Former President Donald J. Trump made history by becoming the first Republican presidential candidate to win Imperial County since George H.W. Bush in 1988, securing 59.53% of the vote. Trump’s success, paired with Jeff Gonzalez’s victory in the State Assembly race, underscores a notable shift toward Republican influence in a region long dominated by Democratic strongholds. Gonzalez’s win makes him the first Republican to represent the valley in the State Assembly in 18 years.

Local races reflected a highly engaged electorate, with tightly contested battles shaping the political landscape. Martha Cardenas-Singh narrowly won the District 2 seat on the Imperial County Board of Supervisors, and new leadership emerged in city councils across Calexico, Brawley, and El Centro.

The Calexico City Council race saw 53.98% voter turnout, with Victor Legaspi leading at 19.48% (4,789 votes), followed by Adriana Marquez at 18.57% (4,566 votes) and Lorenzo Calderon at 12.26% (3,015 votes). Diana Nuricumbo and Lisa Tylenda secured the two-year term seats.

The Brawley City Council race saw 8,063 ballots cast, with a 61.25% voter turnout. Joseph “J.J.” Galvan led with 18.19% (2,949 votes), followed by Timothy E. Kelley with 15.29% (2,479 votes) and John Grass with 14.96% (2,425 votes).

The El Centro City Council race saw a 58.93% voter turnout, with 13,851 ballots cast. Sylvia Marroquin led with 16.57% (4,398 votes), followed by Claudia M. Camarena at 16.44% (4,363 votes) and John “Marty” Ellett at 15.00% (3,980 votes).
