-Editorial

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, the Imperial Valley Fairgrounds will once again be the site of the 11th Annual Imperial Valley 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb & Event. This annual event, which draws participants from across the region, serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by first responders during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The stair climb is not only an opportunity for the community to honor those who gave their lives but also to support current first responders and their families.

With doors opening at 6:00 PM. For just $25, participants can register to take on the challenge of climbing the grandstands at the fairgrounds. Each participant will receive a commemorative t-shirt and stair climb materials, ensuring they have a tangible reminder of their commitment to remembering the heroes of 9/11. Registration can be completed online at iv911.org, and with the anticipation surrounding this event, it is advised that those interested sign up early.

The event will also feature various vendors offering food, drinks, and merchandise. As the evening unfolds, a DJ will provide music to set the tone, and attendees can look forward to a firework display, adding a celebratory element to the evening’s proceedings.

The proceeds from the event are earmarked for several noble causes. The IV 9/11 Stair Climb Committee, the non-profit organization behind the event, is dedicated to supporting firefighters and their families in times of crisis. Additionally, funds will be used to provide scholarships for residents pursuing education in the public safety sector. Another significant goal of the committee is the construction of a permanent memorial at the Imperial Valley Fairgrounds, ensuring that future generations will have a place to honor and remember the sacrifices made on that fateful day.

The IV 9/11 Stair Climb Committee, though small in number, represents a broad spectrum of the community, including members from the fire and law enforcement communities as well as key stakeholders from within the Imperial Valley. Their mission is clear: to ensure that the Imperial Valley “Never Forgets.” They strive to honor the memory of the 343 firefighters, 60 law enforcement personnel, and 10 emergency medical personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty during the 9/11 attacks. This event also serves to enhance the morale, welfare, and productivity of first responders, reinforcing the bond between them and the community they serve.

The IV 9/11 Stair Climb Committee aims to solidify its partnership with the community through the continuation of this annual event.

The 11th Annual Imperial Valley 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb & Event is more than just an event—it’s a powerful statement of unity, remembrance, and support for the men and women who put their lives on the line every day. The event serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by so many, and the enduring spirit of a community that stands together in the face of adversity.
