As of September 1, 2024, residents of Imperial County serving jury duty are now eligible to receive $100 per day starting on the second day of service, an increase from the previous amount of $15. Additionally, the mileage reimbursement rate for jurors has increased from $0.34 to $0.67 per mile for round-trip travel.
This adjustment is part of a pilot program funded by Assembly Bill 1981 and administered by the Judicial Council of California. The program aims to assess whether higher juror compensation and mileage reimbursement can enhance juror diversity and participation.
“Jurors play a critical role in our justice system by ensuring everyone can take advantage of the fundamental right to a jury of their peers,” said California Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero. “Jurors help deliver that fundamental right and the promise of fair and equal access to justice for all Californians.”
Superior Court Presiding Judge Marco D. Núñez also commented, “The increase in juror compensation reflects a commitment to making jury service more accessible and inclusive for all members of our community. By easing the financial burden, we hope to encourage broader participation and ensure that our juries truly represent the diverse voices of Imperial County.”
Along with Imperial County, six other counties are participating in the pilot program: Alameda, El Dorado, Fresno, Monterey, San Bernardino, and Shasta. The program will run until early 2026 or until funding is exhausted.
At the end of the pilot, the Judicial Council will provide a report to the California State Legislature summarizing the program’s findings and offering recommendations to promote juror diversity.
