Imperial Irrigation District (IID) Board President Alex Cardenas has been selected to attend the Legislative Energy Horizon Institute (LEHI) program for 2023. This invitation was extended to President Cardenas through his participation in the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) Policy Makers Council. Through APPA’s sponsorship of the LEHI program, they were able to nominate two members of the Policy Makers Council to attend, and Board President Cardenas was chosen as one of the attendees.
President Alex Cardenas expressed his enthusiasm about attending the LEHI program stating, “I am grateful for the opportunity to attend the LEHI program. This program will deepen my knowledge of energy infrastructure and policy, empowering me to make more informed decisions for the Imperial Irrigation District and the communities we serve.”
The first session of the two-part program took place July 7-11 and focused on site tours, hands-on labs, and technical information at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington. The second session, scheduled for October 11-14 in Washington, D.C., will build upon these foundations with a focus on energy policy.
Through LEHI, policymakers gain an understanding of the complexities associated with electricity, natural gas, and petroleum infrastructure, the regulations governing this infrastructure, and the interdependencies of energy sectors. Over 300 legislators and policymakers have graduated from the LEHI program, making it a vital platform for fostering responsible and informed policy choices.
