Gamacon Mexicali is not just a gathering for comic, gaming, and multimedia fans; it’s a launchpad for aspiring developers and students eager to carve out a place in the booming tech and gaming industries. The event blends conferences, workshops, and hands-on experiences, offering participants direct insights from industry experts and equipping them with practical tools for career success. These opportunities were highlighted during an Oct. 25 press conference at Workaholic in Mexicali, where Gamacon CEO Hugo Abel Castro detailed the five-day event, that culminated in a two-day Expo at the State Center for the Arts.
“We have a new Gamacon and new activities that will be well received,” Castro said.
The event featured industry veteran Esteban Lora, who brings over 20 years of experience in global software and gaming. Lora has been instrumental in managing partnerships for Xbox Game Studios, contributing to franchises like Halo, Forza Motorsport, and Gears of War. His career, rooted in Computer Engineering and a passion for 3D graphics, has focused on business development in the gaming sector.
Mike Towry, a co-founder of the San Diego Comic-Con, lead a panel titled “Nerd Familia,” where attendees can discuss their interests in gaming, comics, or film. Towry noted that the original convention included artists from Baja California and became a cross-border success, much like the opportunities Gamacon continues to create. “We might not speak the same language, but we know what’s going on,” he remarked.
Keithan Jones, founder of KID (Kid Comics), also join Gamacon, bringing his vision of creating “the coolest comics on Earth.” Drawing inspiration from legends like Jack Kirby and Black-owned publishers such as Milestone Comics, KID seeks to introduce new heroes and stories to a diverse audience. “Artists need to know there is a fan base beyond their neighborhood and country,” Jones said. “I’m excited to be part of something different and to open up this world to people who think they don’t have access to it.”
