Gabriel Herrera, better known as Habit to the artistic world, is a promising rap artist, who is making waves in the music scene with his distinctive sound and personal touch. Raised in a home filled with the eclectic rhythms of grunge, ska, and reggae, Herrera developed a passion for Hip Hop and R&B at a young age. Influenced by musical legends such as Eminem, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Korn, Herrera’s style is a blend of these diverse sounds, creating an unorthodox and engaging musical experience.
Growing up in a border town, Herrera’s lyrics are deeply informed by his surroundings. The challenges of living in a low-income area, coupled with the pervasive issues of drugs and poverty, have given him a unique perspective on life in Calexico. His music reflects the daily realities and struggles of the average “Caleciano,” offering an authentic portrayal of his community.
“I grew a fascination with music ever since I was young with rap and I wrote whatever an 8-year-old could write,” Herrera said.
Habit’s journey began early, releasing his first song on SoundCloud at just 14 years old. The track, titled “The Now,” garnered positive feedback from his school friends, which significantly boosted his motivation to continue pursuing music.
“I was never the one of anyone but that music made me feel what was I supposed to do so I fell in love with that,” Habit said.
Despite the ups and downs of his youth, he remained dedicated to his craft. At 19, he met “Capz,” also known as “Captain,” who would become not only his manager but also his close friend. Captain’s association with Richbum Records played an important role in his career, leading to a record deal and a platform to showcase his music.
Since then, Habit has been consistently releasing new tracks and captivating audiences not only in Calexico but throughout the Imperial Valley. “Everything we do, we do through love with hopes to inspire and grow our peoples’ minds and ambition,” he says, offering a glimpse into the driving force behind his music. His unique blend of experiences and influences promises to make a lasting impact on the rap scene.
Herrera, a passionate advocate for Calexico, is deeply committed to his hometown and its people. With a heart dedicated to community service, he continually strives to enhance the quality of life in the city. Whether through supporting local initiatives, engaging in charitable activities, or fostering community spirit, Herrera is unwavering in his resolve to see Calexico flourish. His efforts are a testament to his love for the city and his desire to create positive change for its residents, reflecting his belief that by working together, they can build a brighter future for all.
“We are very united as a city and that’s what makes me proud,” Herrera said.
Herrera wants to showcase Calexico’s unique culture and binational way of life through his music, blending traditional Mexican sounds with elements of American and borderland influences. His music not only celebrate the vibrant heritage of Calexico but also highlight the seamless integration of diverse cultural traditions that define the region so that the world knows what this community is all about.
