Rita F. Pierson once said: “Every child deserves a champion — an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best they can possibly be.”
Launching one of its most ambitious projects, the Beyond Borders Foundation held its first activity with Leo the Lion by visiting a foster home in Mexicali to celebrate with them Three Wise Kings Day.
Leo The Lion made its first-ever public appearance and his arrival put a smile on people’s faces. From the moment he stepped foot in the foster care home, the children were excited to play with him and give him a hug.
The PROMESA Citizen Group has led an annual Christmas activity they call “Navidadando” (Giving in Christmas) in which Christmas gifts are delivered to children in foster homes through donations and sponsorships. This year Beyond Borders agreed to partner for this activity where, in addition to promoting PROMESA’s activities among its readers, it could present Leo publicly, and with this, kick off the activities of our foundation.
Great treats such as pizza, soda, snacks, candy, and a piñata made the day memorable for them. Grupo PROMESA is formed by a group of citizens committed to making a difference in people’s lives by doing their part in volunteering and giving hope to those that need it.
Beyond Borders and Leo will return to give books to the kids at a future date and will continue visiting foster homes and schools in marginalized zones on both sides of the border, promoting reading among children with the campaign titled “Reading Enriches You.”
You can also support our campaign by donating a new or used book for children. If you wish to get involved, please, email us at bborders.gazette@gmail.com
