County of Imperial Applauds State’s Passage of SB 125 Ensuring Investments into Local Infrastructure and Community

-Editorial

The County of Imperial applauds the California State Legislature’s passage of SB 125 for guaranteeing the communities of Imperial County benefit from the development of Lithium Valley and that those profiting from these developments pay their equitable and fair share. With the passage of this bill and through an inclusive process, residents of the County will see long-awaited and much-needed improvements to local infrastructure, public safety, environmental mitigation measures, and the collective quality of life.

“The people of our County have remained at the forefront of any decisions surrounding Lithium Valley, and I would like to publically thank the cities of Calipatria, Westmorland, Brawley, Holtville, and El Centro for their direct support throughout this process. I’d also like to thank our local labor, environmental, public health, and business organizations who supported these measures that put people before profits,” stated Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Jesus Eduardo Escobar. “To our Governor, Gavin Newson, State Senator, Ben Hueso, and Assemblymember, Eduardo Garcia, the County is extremely appreciative of your efforts in seeing the signing of this bill come to fruition and helping to lead the County of Imperial into a better and brighter future.”

“Imperial County appreciates the efforts of Governor Newsom, Senator Hueso, and Assemblymember Garcia in addressing our requests in the Lithium Valley Economic Opportunity Investment Plan and seeking approval of SB 125,” added District 4 Supervisor, Ryan Kelley. “We remain committed to the development of Lithium Valley and are moving forward with Master Planning efforts for Energy Development, Mineral Extraction, and the associated Manufacturing Industry.  We hope to balance the needs of industry with the needs of our community, and the passage of these bills moves all parties in that direction.”

“Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia (Democrat) gave a dynamic and impassioned presentation on the bill that will change our community in ways most May not imagine possible at this point in time of the lithium development but as they say “It is happening” wow what a rush during the vote!  Si Se Puede!  Si Se Pudo!” Community Activist Eric Reyes said in a Facebook post.

The bill now moves on to Governor Newsom’s desk to await his signature.
