Effective Measures Must Be Taken to Address Gender Violence Alert: Rep. Gloria Miramontes

-Editorial

Given the alarming situation of gender violence in Mexico, and specifically in Baja California, it is crucial that authorities and society as a whole take effective measures to fulfill the Gender Violence Alert for Women (AVGM), said Representative Gloria Arcelia Miramontes Plantillas.

The reform to the Law on Access to Women for a Life Free of Violence for the State of Baja California, proposed by the Morena legislator, seeks to harmonize state legislation with the General Law on the matter. This proposal aims to provide perpetrators with comprehensive, specialized, free, and gender-sensitive re-education services in properly accredited institutions.

Additionally, the proposal includes measures necessary to safeguard the integrity, safety, and lives of women, adolescents, or girls experiencing violence.

Miramontes highlighted that states such as Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Michoacán already include this legal figure in their laws, which she seeks to reform in Baja California.

In her reasoning, Gloria Miramontes emphasized that violence against women continues to be a serious and persistent issue in Baja California. In 2024, the state ranked third in the country for female homicides, following only Guanajuato and the State of Mexico.

The Baja California Institute for Women (Inmujer) has pointed out that one of the factors contributing to the high levels of violence is the visibility of the issue, as it was once considered a private matter but is now treated as a public problem.

In 2023, Inmujer assisted nearly 2,000 women experiencing violence and provided over 16,000 preventive services. However, classifying these crimes remains a challenge, as many female homicides are not classified as femicides. In 2024, only one case in Baja California was classified as femicide, suggesting an underestimation of the actual gender violence problem in the region.
