Donald J. Trump was sworn in on January 20, 2025, as the 47th president of the United States, becoming the second leader in U.S. history to serve two non-consecutive terms. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Vice President JD Vance was sworn in by Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

In his inaugural address, Trump pledged to combat inflation, which peaked at 9.1% in June 2022 before falling to 2.9% by December 2024. “We will defeat what was record inflation,” he vowed, promising economic reforms centered on energy independence, manufacturing revitalization, and trade system overhauls. Trump announced plans to terminate the Green New Deal, revoke the electric vehicle mandate, and reinstate energy production initiatives, including filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

He also declared his administration’s intent to reassert control over the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of treaty violations and mismanagement. “We’re taking it back,” Trump said, citing national security concerns over China’s involvement in canal operations.

Donald Trump aimed his predecessor, Joe Biden, accusing him of mismanaging border security and failing to address domestic crises. “We now have a government that cannot manage even a simple crisis at home, while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad,” Trump said. “It fails to protect our magnificent, law-abiding American citizens but provides sanctuary and protection for dangerous criminals, many from prisons and mental institutions that have illegally entered our country from all over the world.”

Trump criticized the Biden administration for prioritizing foreign border security over domestic concerns. “We have a government that has given unlimited funding to the defense of foreign borders but refuses to defend American borders, or, more importantly, its people.”

He also pointed to natural disasters, alleging a lack of federal response. “Our country can no longer deliver basic services in times of emergency, as recently shown by the wonderful people of North Carolina, who have been treated so badly, and other states still suffering from a hurricane that took place many months ago,” Trump said. He also referenced ongoing wildfires in California: “They’re raging through the houses and communities, even affecting some of the wealthiest and most powerful individuals in our country. They don’t have a home any longer. That’s interesting. We can’t let this happen.”

Trump set a nationalistic tone in his inaugural address, pledging to prioritize the nation above all else. “The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world,” Trump declared. “We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer. During every single day of the Trump administration, I will, very simply, put America first.”

On immigration, Trump outlined a series of executive orders, including reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, declaring a national emergency at the southern border, and designating cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.

Trump also announced policies aimed at eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in federal agencies, reaffirming a color-blind and merit-based approach. He declared a policy recognizing only two genders and pledged to reinstate service members discharged over COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

Trump acknowledged an assassination attempt against him during the campaign, describing it as a key moment of faith and resolve: “I was saved by God to make America great again.”

The inauguration coincided with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Trump honored King’s legacy, stating, “We will strive to make his dream a reality.”

In keeping with tradition, Trump and Vice President Vance visited Arlington National Cemetery and held inaugural balls featuring performances by Nelly, Jason Aldean, and Rascal Flatts. Trump also hosted a rally for supporters, where Kid Rock and Village People performed.

Meanwhile, outgoing President Joe Biden issued preemptive pardons for family members and allies, including Dr. Anthony Fauci and Gen. Mark Milley, citing concerns over politically motivated investigations.

Trump concluded his address with a call for national renewal: “From this moment on, America’s decline is over. The American dream will thrive like never before.”

Before the inauguration ceremony, the U.S. Capitol Rotunda hosted an array of prominent figures. The CEOs of Meta, X, and Amazon were seated in front of President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet, reflecting the administration’s focus on corporate leadership. Former and current foreign leaders, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Argentine President Javier Milei, were also in attendance. All living former U.S. presidents, Supreme Court justices, and Trump’s children were present, taking their seats on the platform ahead of the proceedings.

In Emancipation Hall, overflow viewers applauded as Trump entered the Rotunda, with a brief “U-S-A” chant breaking out before attendees were asked to take their seats. The bipartisan leaders of the 60th Inaugural Committee began the ceremony with remarks on the resilience of American democracy. “Our great American experiment, grounded in the rule of law, has endured,” said committee chair Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Her Republican counterpart, Sen. Deb Fischer, added, “Democracy allows endurance, the permanence of a nation, and never change.” These remarks set the stage for the inaugural address and accompanying proceedings.
