As autumn approaches and the days grow shorter, couples everywhere find themselves drawn to the allure of a cozy getaway. From the golden hues of falling leaves to the warmth of cider by the fire, fall offers a perfect backdrop for romance. This year, a survey conducted by DatingAdvice asked 3,000 couples to share their favorite destinations for a romantic fall escape across the United States. When it came to California, Big Bear Lake topped the list, with Napa Valley and Julian close behind.

Big Bear Lake, nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, is a quintessential autumn retreat, offering couples a mix of outdoor adventure and serene relaxation. Known for its beautiful lake surrounded by forests of pine and oak, Big Bear Lake becomes a haven for couples looking to escape city life and immerse themselves in nature’s beauty. The survey highlights that couples love Big Bear for its breathtaking lake views, the crisp mountain air, and the chance to snuggle up in rustic cabins with fireplaces – the ultimate cozy experience as temperatures begin to dip. Popular activities include hiking or biking along the lake, taking scenic drives to admire the vibrant fall foliage, or simply unwinding with a warm drink by the fire.

Coming in as the second most popular fall destination in California, Napa Valley enchants couples with its autumn transformation. Known globally for its wineries, the region takes on a special charm in the fall when the grape harvest brings the valley alive. Couples visiting Napa in autumn can embark on scenic vineyard tours, enjoy wine tastings, and retreat to luxurious bed-and-breakfasts set amidst fields that blaze with rich hues of red, orange, and yellow. For many, the romance of Napa lies not only in the fine wine but in the ambiance created by cozy accommodations and serene landscapes.

Rounding out California’s top three romantic fall getaways is Julian, a small mountain town famous for its apple orchards and historic charm. Fall in Julian is synonymous with apple picking, fresh-baked pies, and colorful foliage. Couples are drawn to the simplicity of Julian’s allure; they can wander through apple orchards, explore the town’s quaint shops and eateries, and share a slice of the town’s famous apple pie. The town’s heritage buildings and rustic vibe make it an ideal destination for those looking to slow down and enjoy the season.

While Big Bear Lake, Napa Valley, and Julian highlight California’s most beloved fall destinations, the survey also uncovered other romantic spots across the U.S. that couples adore. The Berkshires in Massachusetts, known for their vibrant fall colors, offer couples a scenic getaway filled with charming towns, art galleries, and cozy fireside relaxation. Similarly, Lake Tahoe in Nevada enchants visitors with its crystal-clear waters and golden aspens, providing a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation as fall brings an occasional dusting of snow to nearby peaks. For those looking for a unique landscape, Jemez Springs in New Mexico offers striking red cliffs and golden cottonwoods, with opportunities to hike scenic trails by day and relax in natural hot springs by night.

Other notable fall getaways include the Willamette Valley in Oregon, where wine-loving couples can enjoy autumn hues, scenic vineyards, and cozy farm-to-table dining experiences. Block Island in Rhode Island, known for its peaceful coastal beauty, offers a quieter, more intimate atmosphere in the fall with golden marshes, tranquil beaches, and historic inns. Each of these destinations provides couples with distinctive scenery and inviting ambiance, making them ideal for creating romantic memories amid the magic of the season.

The survey by DatingAdvice revealed more than just favorite destinations; it offered insights into what couples value most in a romantic fall escape. Nearly half of the respondents (46%) indicated that scenic beauty, especially the vibrant colors of fall foliage, was the most important factor in choosing a destination. A close 34% emphasized the need for cozy accommodations, preferring places with fireplaces, rustic decor, and a comfortable atmosphere. For 10% of participants, engaging activities such as hiking, wine tasting, or local tours were essential to their ideal getaway.

When it came to accommodation preferences, 25% of couples said they would choose a secluded cabin in the woods. Another 22% preferred a charming bed-and-breakfast, envisioning floral bedding, fireplaces, and a hearty breakfast prepared with care. Additionally, 21% of respondents were drawn to lakeside or mountain lodges, hoping for scenic views to wake up to each morning.

The survey also highlighted couples’ favorite fall activities. Nearly one-third (28%) would opt for wine or cider tastings to immerse themselves in the local flavors. Another 22% longed for quiet evenings by the fireplace, while 18% cherished scenic drives to see the foliage. Hiking or nature walks are also rated highly, with 18% of couples seeking a more active way to connect with nature and each other.

Interestingly, the ideal duration for a fall getaway was split evenly between a weekend and a four-to-five-day trip, both preferred by 34% of respondents. However, 18% of optimistic participants wished they could extend their fall retreat to a whole week.

The survey found that fall’s quintessential flavors play a significant role in creating a memorable experience. Hot chocolate with marshmallows emerged as the top choice, with 44% of couples citing it as their favorite treat for a cozy night in. Mulled wine or cider (18%), freshly baked pies (12%), and the seasonal favorite pumpkin spice latte (12%) also ranked highly as must-have indulgences for a fall getaway.

In terms of the scenery couples most desired, forests and mountains painted in autumn colors topped the list, chosen by 32% of respondents. A further 26% loved the charm of cozy small towns, reminiscent of the atmosphere in shows like Gilmore Girls. Coastal landscapes with fall foliage held an appeal for 18%, offering a mix of seaside beauty and autumn ambiance.
