In the face of recent executive orders signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed her commitment to defending Mexico’s sovereignty and independence. During a recent address, Sheinbaum emphasized that her administration will always prioritize the well-being of Mexican nationals living in the United States, stating, “We will act within the framework of our Constitution, in defense of our sovereignty and independence.”
Sheinbaum’s statements came in response to Trump’s executive orders on national security and migration, which reignited policies like the “Remain in Mexico” protocol (MPP). This policy, introduced in 2018 during Trump’s first term, requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico during their immigration proceedings. Sheinbaum clarified that although the decree is a continuation of previous policies, her government will continue to respond with a humanitarian approach, ensuring migrants’ rights are upheld.
A key focus of her remarks was the reinstatement of an executive order aimed at designating certain Mexican drug cartels as “terrorist organizations.” Sheinbaum made it clear that while Mexico will cooperate with the U.S. on security issues, it will do so in a manner that respects Mexico’s sovereignty. “We coordinate, but we are a free, independent, and sovereign country,” Sheinbaum affirmed, underscoring Mexico’s stance in maintaining equal footing in international relations.
Sheinbaum also addressed concerns related to U.S. trade policies, specifically those affecting the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). She explained that, according to U.S. orders, the U.S. Trade Representative will review the agreement by 2026, but the government of Mexico remains committed to engaging in dialogue with the U.S. to ensure mutual interests are respected.
On the topic of migration, Sheinbaum reiterated Mexico’s “Mexico Hugs You” strategy, designed to support Mexicans in the U.S. facing deportation or wishing to return voluntarily. This initiative includes the establishment of nine migrant assistance centers along Mexico’s northern border, offering comprehensive services like legal aid, healthcare, and housing to returning nationals.
The strategy also involves extensive coordination between various government agencies, ensuring that returning migrants are not only welcomed but given the tools to reintegrate into their communities in Mexico. This support includes transportation assistance for those being repatriated and a focus on providing a better future for them in a country undergoing transformation.
Through these initiatives, Sheinbaum highlighted her administration’s dedication to a respectful and constructive relationship with the United States, rooted in shared interests while fiercely protecting Mexico’s sovereignty and the rights of its citizens abroad.
As Mexico navigates complex relations with its northern neighbor, Sheinbaum remains firm in her position: the defense of Mexico’s sovereignty, the protection of Mexican nationals, and a commitment to peace and cooperation with the international community.
