Chamber Celebrates 153 Years as Leading Voice for San Diego Business Community

Nearly 900 of San Diego region’s local businesses, community leaders, and elected officials gathered for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Anniversary Celebration. For 153 years, the Chamber has committed to creating the best environment for San Diego businesses and neighborhoods to thrive.   

“The Chamber commemorated the impact of inventive collaboration, unwavering leadership, and community engagement– while renewing

 its dedication to fostering opportunities and linking the business community with essential resources for success,”

said Jerry Sanders, President and CEO. “It’s truly remarkable to witness the accomplishments of the Chamber over the last year and the impactful outcomes the organization has provided for both members and the San Diego regional business community as a whole.” 

The event celebrated the Chamber’s members and partners, introduced the 2024 Board of Directors including Board Chair Alessandra Lezama, founder and CEO of TOOTRiS, and highlighted accomplishments achieved over the past year. The Chamber also shared its priorities for 2024, which include addressing childcare accessibility, housing, significant development and revitalization projects on both sides of the border, sustainability, and growing the binational economy and global competitiveness.    

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a key part of all the Chamber is doing to strengthen our business community. and drive our economy and region forward,” said Alessandra Lezama, Chamber Board Chair and Founder and CEO of TOOTRiS. “Being involved in the Chamber and having the support of this organization as I was building companies and establishing myself in San Diego have given me the leverage and fuel to rise in the region. I look forward to offering that support and opportunity to more business leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs who call San Diego home.”  

The Chamber presented two awards honoring local leaders who have made a difference in the community and in recognition of work that has contributed significantly to strengthening the San Diego region and economy: 

Herb Klein Spirit of San Diego Award:  

The Herb Klein Spirit of San Diego award honors an individual who has played a vital role in shaping our region. As a cherished figure in our community, this individual has had a tremendous and lasting impact on our city and our region.  

Helen made history as the first woman appointed to the position in 2012. Recently retired as the County’s top executive, Helen is celebrated as a visionary leader who inspired those around her by embracing big ideas and never shying away from tough decisions while keeping the best interests of the residents of San Diego County front of mind. Her work helped assist more than 1 million residents annually by increasing access to Cal Fresh, CalWORKS, Medi-Cal, and other safety net programs. Helen leaves a legacy for others to aspire to and is remembered fondly for her steady guidance, incredible knowledge, and invaluable mentorship to countless employees. 

The Moving San Diego Forward award recognizes work that has significantly impacted and positively contributed to San Diego’s history and our future.
