To strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between Mexico and the United States, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce held its 17th annual delegation in Mexico City from October 20 to 23 at the St. Regis Hotel. This important event brings together more than 90 business leaders and officials from San Diego and Baja California, with the mission of advocating for initiatives that promote economic development and strengthen the bilateral relationship in the Cali-Baja region.
During the event, the Secretary of Tourism of Baja California, Miguel Aguíñiga Rodríguez, along with Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, took part in the “Two Nation Destination” panel, moderated by Carolina Chávez Vázquez, Director of the SIMSA Foundation, where they addressed key topics for strengthening the tourism sector in the Cali-Baja binational region. In their presentation, they discussed crucial initiatives to improve tourism connectivity between Mexico and the United States, to consolidate Baja California as a two-nation vacation destination.
One of the main topics during the event was the 49th edition of Mexico’s Tianguis Turístico, to be held from April 28 to May 1, 2025, in Baja California, which for the first time in the event’s history will be binational. As part of the actions to highlight the cross-border aspect of the event, the city of San Diego, California, will be the first city to have its stand alongside the 32 states of Mexico.
The Secretary of Tourism of Baja California, Miguel Aguíñiga Rodríguez, highlighted the close collaboration with the San Diego Tourism Authority (SDTA) to promote both destinations as part of a single travel experience. This synergy will strengthen the region’s projection as an integrated tourism destination, driving sector growth and contributing to economic development on both sides of the border. Additionally, he mentioned that work is underway with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to ensure efficient logistics that facilitate the movement of more than 10,000 tourism professionals between Tijuana and San Diego.
During the event, the importance of initiatives for the development and promotion of health and wellness tourism, a rapidly growing industry in Baja California, was emphasized. This sector has gained international recognition due to its quality, cutting-edge technology, and global standards, which guarantee safety and excellence in patient care. This trend is expected to continue rising, consolidating Baja California as one of the most important destinations for medical tourism in the region.
Baja California’s presence at the 2024 Binational Delegation reaffirms the State Government’s commitment to continue strengthening tourism cooperation with the United States. Through this collaboration, the aim is to attract more international visitors and create opportunities that favor economic growth and the joint promotion of both destinations, solidifying the Cali-Baja region as a benchmark in cross-border tourism.
