Baja California made history this week as it hosted the 49th edition of the Tianguis Turístico, the most important tourism event in Latin America, for the first time in a binational format. The event opened with a celebration of culture, sustainability, and economic collaboration, and concluded with a ceremonial handoff to the state of Guerrero, which will host the 50th anniversary edition in 2026.
Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda welcomed national and international visitors to Playas de Rosarito, where the Tianguis began with conferences, gastronomic showcases, and cultural activities open to the public. Accompanied by Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, the governor emphasized that tourism continues to be a pillar of Mexico’s economy and a livelihood for thousands of families.
“Mexico is one of the world’s favorite destinations, and tourism helps break down borders and builds trust and friendship,” Governor Ávila said. “Baja California is a privileged land where ecosystems converge, surrounded by two seas, and enriched by a deep cultural heritage that blends indigenous roots with modern artistic expression.”
Governor Ávila highlighted the diversification of Baja California’s tourism offerings, including medical tourism, business travel, ecotourism, and sustainable community-based tourism. She noted that this success is powered by the creativity and hard work of residents.
Secretary Rodríguez Zamora reinforced tourism’s role as the third-largest source of foreign revenue for the country. She also announced the upcoming arrival of the international ITB Americas 2026 fair, which will continue to raise Mexico’s profile on the global stage.
“This Tianguis is becoming more international with each edition,” Rodríguez Zamora said. “Tourism understands no limits—it’s a window of cooperation, identity, and shared prosperity.”
As part of the public celebration, more than 30 free activities and events were scheduled starting April 29. Visitors could explore pavilions from Mexico’s 32 states and more than 200 destinations beginning May 1.
The event culminated in Tijuana with the symbolic handoff of the Tianguis Turístico to Guerrero. Governor Ávila, joined again by Secretary Rodríguez Zamora and Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda, marked the moment as a milestone for Baja California and Mexico’s tourism future.
“This has been a historic edition—our first binational Tianguis—and we are proud to pass the baton to the birthplace of this great tradition,” said Ávila. “Guerrero will carry the legacy forward with excellence.”
Governor Salgado praised Baja California’s warm hospitality and the strong outcomes already visible from this year’s edition. Rodríguez Zamora added that Tianguis Turístico is not just a showcase for destinations but a platform for transforming lives across the country.
With eyes now set on Guerrero 2026, Mexico’s tourism sector continues its mission to position the country as the fifth most visited destination in the world by 2030, a goal set by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
