During the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Mexico reaffirmed its commitment to a multilateral approach aimed at promoting fair, inclusive, and sustainable development. Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, participated in the UN Future Summit, where she emphasized the need to rethink the current multilateral system and proposed concrete actions to address global challenges.
One of the summit’s major achievements was the adoption of the Pact for the Future, which includes the Global Digital Compact and the **Declaration on Future Generations**. These agreements aim to ensure intergenerational justice and mobilize resources for more equitable and sustainable development, a priority that Mexico championed during negotiations.
In her speech, Bárcena stressed the importance of moving beyond nationalistic perspectives and revitalizing multilateralism as an essential tool for solving global problems. “We must critically assess where we stand, recognize the legitimacy crisis facing the UN, and sow hope for the future,” said the foreign minister.
Mexico introduced several key reform proposals, including accelerating progress toward gender equality and rethinking economic models that perpetuate privilege, advocating for a shift away from extractivism and environmental degradation toward sustainability. Bárcena also highlighted the urgency of creating a more inclusive international **financial architecture** that better reflects the needs of all nations.
A central issue for Mexico was the pressing need for a world free of nuclear weapons, particularly in the context of rising military tensions. Bárcena also underscored the importance of development financing and the need for reforms in global governance, including the UN Security Council.
“It is essential to ensure viable, transformative solutions based on solid evidence. For this, the United Nations system must have a clear mandate to measure and implement global agendas,” Bárcena explained.
The Mexican government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to multilateralism, recognizing it as key to achieving a fairer and more sustainable future. With its active participation in the Future Summit, Mexico continues to position itself as a global leader, ready to drive the reforms necessary to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
