More Than 120 Lawmakers Join in Letter Urging Care Stimulus Payments Are Automatically Sent to Vulnerable Communities

Washington, D.C. – This week, Rep. Vargas (CA-51) joined Peter DeFazio (OR-04) and over 120 lawmakers in a letter demanding that Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner, Charles Rettig, along with Social Security Commissioner, Andrew Saul, and Veterans’ Affairs Secretary, Robert Wilkie, ensure that stimulus payments are automatically sent to seniors, veterans receiving pensions, and individuals with disabilities.

“I joined my colleagues in writing a letter urging the Trump administration to automatically send CARES Act stimulus checks to veterans, seniors, and the disabled,” said Rep. Vargas. “Any delay and extra hurdles in sending these payments will bring unnecessary harm to already vulnerable individuals.”

The IRS will automatically send economic stimulus checks to eligible taxpayers who filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return. There are, however, individuals that may be excluded as they often don’t owe taxes. This includes Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries, veterans who receive pensions, and Social Security beneficiaries, including retired seniors and individuals who experience disabilities.

“Our nation is suffering from this unprecedented public health crisis. The American people deserve clear access to government aid and resources. The President must ensure that we are taking care of our seniors, veterans receiving pensions, and individuals with disabilities.”

Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border. Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress. He serves on the House Financial Services Committee.
