Red Alert Issued at Mexicali Border Due to A Possible Iranian Terrorist Threat

-Editorial

The Mexicali and San Luis, Rio Colorado Port of Entry continue to be on high alert due to the possibility of an Iranian terrorist threat.

Authorities were in a high alert Friday to an advisory from the Customs and Border Protection in Arizona.

Mexicali Police Chief Ana Maria Andrade said they received reports that four Iran nationals, possibly carrying explosives, were going to attempt to cross the border in the area of San Luis to Mexicali.

“We are working with the state guard and the national guard, we will coordinate efforts while the alert remains,” Andrade said.

The San Luis Port of Entry was closed for a couple of hours on Jan. 10. CBP Arizona said it was closed due to a “special event” but there was no specified reason or if it was linked to the high alert.

In related news, it was reported last week in several media sources that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials held up dozens of Iranians and Iranian Americans at a Washington state border crossing over the weekend, detaining some for up to 12 hours, in the wake of government-issued warnings about Iranian security threats.

CBP officials responded saying the extended wait times at that port of entry were the combined result of lowered holiday staffing, high border traffic and increased security implemented at border crossings.
