Ways to save energy this summer

-Article provided by Imperial Irrigation District

Living in the desert means summer heat and higher electric bills. Although there is not much one can do about the heat, one can save cash and reduce carbon by minimizing energy use.

Below are recommendations from IID that can help save energy during the summer months.

  • Use summer energy-saving thermostat settings. Set your thermostat to 78°F or higher when your home is occupied and at 85°F when you are away. Install a programmable or smart thermostat for added convenience.
  • Avoid using appliances between 4 pm and 8 pm. Performing energy intensive tasks, like washing clothes or dishes, uses electricity when energy demand and temperatures are at their highest.
  • Use and switch off power strips. With the flip of a switch, cut power off to multiple devices at once to save time, energy and money. Better yet, use smart power strips and smart outlets that offer more opportunities for energy savings.
  • Replace your five most-used light fixtures and/or bulbs with ENERGY STAR® products. ENERGY STAR bulbs use up to 90 percent less wattage, cost less to operate than standard bulbs and provide the same brightness (lumens).
  • Change or clean your air conditioner’s filter at least once a month to keep your system running at peak performance.
  • Stop cooling the outdoors. Stop air leaks from escaping through the attic, doors, windows, outlets, switch plates, recessed lighting fixtures, ductwork and other places.
  • Unplug that second fridge in the hot garage or utility room. IID will pick up your old refrigerator and pay $50 for the privilege of properly recycling it. Sign-up at iid.com/refrigeratorrecycling.
  • Purchase and install energy-efficient appliances. They don’t just save you money, but they’re good for the environment. Many new appliances are equipped with an eco mode for added energy savings. Visit iid.com/residentialrebates for more information.
  • Download the IID Customer Connect app for more energy saving tips.
